PRODUCT HIGHLIGHT: Surface Cleaner

One of my recent blogs was all about DIY and reasons it’s awesome to make your own products for green cleaning, BUT if DIY just isn't your thing and you'd rather just buy safe products ready-to-use, this is one of my FAVORITE cleaners.

🌿Surface Cleaner is basically a 409-type product alternative. It does #allthethings (well, almost). I use it to clean my kitchen after dinner every night. Countertops, floors, walls, fixtures, electronics, stone and granite. Before we had a stain remover, I even used it on clothing stains. It smells wonderful - light and citrus-y🍋. It does a great job cleaning thanks to the natural antimicrobial properties of all the plant-derived ingredients.

The key ingredients (listed on the front of the label) are lime, lemongrass and tea tree. Let’s get serious, though, dig a little deeper into the ingredients (because that’s what we do!) and find out why they were included! This is straight from our glossary of ingredients, available to anyone (gotta love that complete transparency!)

  • purified water

  • coco glucoside is made from 100% natural, renewable, plant-derived feedstocks and is readily biodegradable. It possesses excellent foaming capacity and cleansing properties and is gentle and effective with proven mildness. Free of sulfates, preservatives, and ethylene oxide.

  • grape alcohol - we use perfumer’s grade organic grape alcohol, made from only the best certified organic wines. The alcohol is the highest level of quality, while at the same time adhering to environmentally sound practices. The organic alcohol is three stage filtered to assure the highest level of purity. Alcohol is the best food grade, or edible, solvent for extracting a number of naturally occurring herb constituents that are poorly soluble in water. These constituents include: resins, essential oils, balsams, and many alkaloids. Alcohol acts as a preservative, maintaining the shelf life of an extract for several years. Alcohol facilitates quick absorption of the herbal components. Our organic alcohol is made from organically grown grapes. All phases of the production process, including fermentation, distillation, packaging, and shipping are done under strict organic guidelines. In addition to being organically certified, our sustainable alcohol product is produced in accordance with the values of sustainable development - certified organic farming methods, small scale production facilities, at closed-loop production facilities.

  • leuconostoc/radish root ferment filtrate provides an effective combination of skin conditioning, moisturizing, and antimicrobial properties.

  • organic lime essential oil - citrus aurantifolia rejuvenates the skin, keeps it shining, protects it from infections and reduces body odor due to presence of a large amount of vitamin-C and flavonoids, both of which are strong anti-oxidants, anti-biotic and disinfectants. When applied externally on skin, its acids scrub out the dead cells, cures dandruff, rashes, bruises etc.

  • lemongrass essential oil - cymbopogon citratus is in the grass family and is commonly cultivated as a medicinal and culinary herb with a scent similar to a lemon. It is an excellent household cleaner. Research shows that lemongrass oil has antifungal properties. (Shadab, Q., Hanif, M. & Chaudhary, F.M. (1992) Antifungal activity by lemongrass essential oils. Pak. J. Sci. Ind. Res. 35, 246-249.)

  • (organic tea tree) oil - melaleuca alternifolia is an essential oil distilled from the Australian plant Melaleuca alternifolia. It has been used medicinally for centuries and has been identified as an antiseptic. Tea tree oil has also been found to have substantial anti-fungal, antibacterial, anti-viral and anti-inflammatory activity.

  • citric acid it is a natural substance from citrus fruits used to adjust pH.

💡Tips: When I get past the ridges in the bottle (about 1/4 gone) I fill it back up with water to stretch it a bit.

If you're using it on wood floors, you can really dilute more like 1 T to 2 C warm water.
